Gordon Hextall began his career in UK Social Security frontline operations before moving to IT and large-scale projects in the mid 1980s.  He has over 25 years experience of largescale project and programme management in an IT environment and has been responsible for over 30 national IT application development programmes.

In 1998, he became Chief Executive of the War Pensions Agency (now Veterans Agency) and principal adviser to ministers on war pensions policy and operations.  He later moved (2001) to be Chief Operating Officer for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Programme and Systems Delivery Group and then became the Chief Operating Officer of NHS Connecting for Health in 2003, responsible for managing the National Programme for IT. 

Gordon is married with 2 sons.  He is a Trustee of the War Widows Association of Great Britain and was awarded the CB in June 2003 for services to war pensioners and to programme management.
