Neil Shaw
Bombardier Transportation (BT) – Mainline and Metros

Neil has over 30 years' experience working within the railway industry.

During this time he has worked in Production, Production Engineering, Quality Improvement, Business Process Re-engineering (BPR), and Project Management.

In 1997 he joined Adtranz (now part of BT) after spending 5 years in consultancy with ABB ProCon Limited where he specialised in BPR and Project Management.

In 1997 Adtranz had secured two contracts for the supply of a new generation of Electrical Multiple Units (EMU) to be known as Electrostars. The concurrent development of the new EMU to suit two different operating modes and two customers from a single Electrostar concept design was a significant challenge. It was decided that in order to achieve the aspiration of maximum commonality and minimum part count for the Electrostar Product Platform there had to be a Project Manager for the New Product Introduction Process which Neil was appointed to.

To fulfil this requirement Neil introduced a process involving Simultaneous Engineering Teams in order to develop the Electrostar Product Platform to meet the commercial and programme requirements of the contracts.

After successfully completing the above Neil was responsible for the Project Management input of all tendering activities associated with the Electrostar Platform.

Between 2000 and 2003 he was part of a number of project management teams delivering EMUs to London and South East of England.

During 2002 and 2003 BT invested in benchmarking many of the practices prevalent in the Motor Industry e.g. Lean Manufacturing and Visual Management Systems. In 2003 Neil took on the Management of the Site Visualisation Centre which was used to assist the governance of all of the projects being undertaken in Derby with the purpose of ensuring accurate progress reporting, developing and monitoring of corrective action plans wherever necessary to ensure delivery programmes were met.

In 2004 BT introduced Project Management Offices (PMO) into each of its operating divisions, and Neil became the Manager of the Services Division PMO. Later that year BT launched a major change initiative (PRO) aimed at getting a greater alignment within the organisation and processes to projects, effectively moving to a project led organisation. The leadership of the initiatives fell to the PMOs. A feature of PRO was the introduction of a common governance process across the whole organisation that included scorecards and template reports.

In 2007 Neil moved to take up the position of PMO Manager for the Mainline and Metros Division in the UK and provides support to a portfolio of projects with an order backlog value of around £2 billion.

Neil has an MSc in Manufacturing Management and is a member of the Project Management Institute.
